What a 10-Year-Old Cellist Can Teach Us

Sometimes it takes people who normally don’t have much to do with new media to make it really meaningful. If you’ve been following the recent debates about blogging vs. twitter/friendfeed, it makes you feel how all important this new media stuff is supposed to be to the world and in a way I suppose it is. However, spending time with family and relatives this holiday has made me realize that our web culture is not a very big world: the few A-list bloggers, the web heads and their followers. It became especially clear to me when my wife posted my 10 year old son’s recent cello recital to YouTube and the two started to see the page views go up and a handful of supportive comments coming in (a cello dad in Mexico and a professional cellist in Japan.) Add to this the hordes of emails and Facebook messages sending their kind words out to my son has made it blazingly clear that social media is about people like my wife and son connecting with others about they really care about in their everyday life – in this case a young boy learning to play an impossibly hard instrument and surviving his second recital without making a fool of himself (with the incident of his cello stand sliding down in mid-performance.)

What I’m taking a long time to say is that the appreciation the two of them feel for the 350 video views mean a whole lot and makes all this talk about the right channel and whether we use blogs or feeds or 140 character posts seem kind of overdramatized and a little silly. At the same, without these cool technology trends and the pioneers who popularize them, my family wouldn’t have a valuable way to reach out. In the words of the Scobleizer, it’s not how many followers you have but the quality of the communication. So now here is the world famous recital of my son doing Beethoven 7 Variations Mozart’s Magic Flute on cello. Listen and weep and watch for the stand to slide and the recovery at the end!
