Japanese prefer intimate social media

I think the intimate nature of Japanese Twitterers is very telling. It reminds me of how people blog in Japan with lots of personal content around their daily lives, what they ate or bought today, etc. The everyday-ness of Japanese social media/CGM is what makes Twitter a good fit. That and it’s a very simple mobile SNS. In the 2009 predictions paper above someone predicts that Google will buy Twitter and improve it. Since Yahoo is Japan’s big search engine, I wonder what that would do to user impression of a Google-Twitter service. Even better would be a Yahoo.jp-Softbank-Twitter tie-up. Then Softbank could place a Twitter button on their mobiles like they do with Yahoo.jp and drive accelerated traffic to a Japan-based Twitter. I imagine adoption rates would shoot up and Mixi would be left in the dust. Click here to have a look at a Softbank handset I photoshopped a Twitter button onto.
